There is genius in simplicity. This week’s podcast spotlight shines on two innovation leaders, Kyle Shay and Michael Napoleon who have established their company on this widely known ideal. Shay and Napoleon are the founders of SuperSpeed Golf, a systematic, innovative golf program that has integrated unique principles of speed training to help improve club speed.

Michael and Kyle built SuperSpeed Golf with the purpose of offering a simple, goal-based training system that is easy to follow and easy to implement. With the numerous coaching techniques and detailed analytical training that is out in the golf industry today athletes sometimes can lose their “athletic nature” in a variety of complicated programs, this is where SuperSpeed Golf comes in. Shay and Napoleon believe that athletes can be, “held back by trying to control too many aspects of the game and not just letting themselves be naturally athletic.” With SuperSpeed programs, players can come in with a crowded mind of various techniques, tools, advice, and analytical information they have accumulated throughout their years of playing, and essentially reach a space that allows them to play with a sense of freedom.

An interesting concept of SuperSpeed golf is the uniqueness of their overall theory of increasing the speed of a swing with lighter clubs. Shay and Napoleon put this concept into perspective by using an example. A typical player may swing at 100 mph with a driver, SuperSpeed Golf takes that measurement, and after the first session of their program increases that player’s speed by an average of 5%. The player then uses different clubs provided by SuperSpeed golf such as their 20% Light club (20% lighter than a driver) which could increase their speed up to 118-120 mph. Clubs range from the 20% Light to the 5% Heavy (5% heavier than a driver). Using the science of “neuro-muscular responsiveness” SuperSpeed golf can train the brain to govern the muscular system into moving faster than it had originally thought it could. The interesting part? This is counter to what many athletes and coaches have been taught. Through past years, it has been a norm for athletes to train heavy to increase speed. For example, a batter may take practice swings with a heavy bat before stepping up to the plate to take a game-like swing to increase speed. SuperSpeed Golf has gone against the grain with their vision.

Their mental goal? SuperSpeed wants their athletes focusing on “not trying to consciously control things when they’re on the golf course and trying to become more reactionary.” Dr. Bhrett McCabe adds in “Our training, our coaching, our development are all investment into our underlying ability, so by raising our ability to swing at a higher level, I don’t need to put conscious energy onto it under competition. I can believe the investment is going to be paid out over time.”
